Los cultivos transgénicos se siembran en nuestro país desde 1996, cuando se introdujo la soja RR de la multinacional Monsanto. A ella se sumó en el 2003 el maíz MON 810 (de Monsanto) y en el 2004 el maíz Bt11 de la empresa Syngenta.
Durante el 2009 fueron aprobados nuevos cultivos transgénicos para comercializar su semilla en Estados Unidos. Estas variedades de la oleaginosa no están autorizadas comercialmente en Uruguay, pero sí pueden ser multiplicadas y exportadas en su totalidad a dicho país. Bajo esta modalidad está la soja de Monsanto Uruguay S.A. MON89788 (RR2Y) y la soja A2704-12 (LL). Ambas variedades fueron sembraron durante la zafra 2009-2010 en 1.500 hectáreas. ¿Donde fueron a parar las semillas que no se exportaron? ¿Dónde quedó el rastrojo de dichos cultivos?
