India Opens Doors to Organic Markets

Farmers across India gathered in the district of Uttaranchal for a two-day conference aimed at including India's farmers in the $37 billion global market for organic foods.

The conference, Vasundhara: A National Gathering of Organic Communities, also focused on the suicide rate of India's farmers that is often linked to mounting debt caused by the treadmill of chemical farming.

"More than 25,000 farmers have taken their own lives in India in the last five years. The agricultural crisis is aggravated by unfair practices of trade liberalization and globalization and the consequences of deepening farmers' debts," said Dr. Vandana Shiva, founder of the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology.

"The success of our organic growers has shown that farm incomes can increase threefold by giving up the use of chemicals and by using inputs produced by on-farm biodiversity," added Shiva.

The conference resulted in India Organic Vision 2020, a blueprint placing small and marginal farmers and organic farming at the center of India's agricultural policy.

Organic farming helps India's farmers by being less expensive, environmentally friendly and produces higher yields, conference organizers say.
