CARMELO'S FAVORITE BOOKS IN 2008/ LOS LIBROS FAVORITOS DE CARMELO 2008:
THE SHOCK DOCTRINE, by Naomi Klein. Almost certainly the most important progressive book of 2008. http://www.naomiklein.org/main
THE TYRANNY OF OIL, by Antonia Juhasz. A worthy successor to Ida Tarbell's "History of Standard Oil". http://www.thebushagenda.net/
RISING POWERS, SHRINIKING PLANET: THE NEW GEOPOLITICS OF ENERGY, by Michael T Klare.
SICK PLANET: CORPORATE FOOD AND MEDICINE, by Stan Cox. An excellent eco-socialist manifesto. http://www.sickplanetbook.com/
GAVELING DOWN THE RABBLE: HOW 'FREE TRADE' IS STEALING OUR DEMOCRACY, by Jane Anne Morris. www.gavelingdowntherabble.com
BIOSAFETY FIRST: HOLISTIC APPROACHES TO RISK AND UNCERTAINTY IN GENETIC ENGINEERING. Scholarly but not too difficult to read. One of the best critical books on biotechnology. Available only in Norway. Each copy costs about $100. Out of print, sorry.
IN DEFENSE OF FOOD, by Michael Pollan. One of the best food writers on earth. http://www.michaelpollan.com/
FAVORITE FILMS OF 2008:
WALL-E. Superb dystopian film, ironic in a number of exquisite ways, not recommended for the overly cerebral. http://carmeloruiz.blogspot.com/search/label/WALL-E
LE MONDE SELON MONSANTO. Great investigative work by French film maker Marie Monique Robin. Everything you might want to know about Monsanto. An excellent companion to Deborah Koons Garcia's "The Future of Food".
THE MEATRIX. Just check the web site: http://www.themeatrix.com/
FAVORITE TV SHOWS (YES, I WATCH TV)
Entourage. Superstar Vincent Chase, a sort of combination of Chayanne and Orlando Bloom, followed around by an entourage that includes his untalented yet endearing brother Johnny "Drama", his jittery manager, nicknamed "E", and someone called "Turtle" who does not actually contribute much of anything. But Chase's quick-tongued and foul-mouthed agent, Ari Gold (expertly portrayed by Jeremy Piven) really steals the show. Gold's submissive sidekick/assistant Lloyd deserves an honorable mention- he is actually the character with the most inner personal strength. Gold knows full well he can't get by without him.
House. The genius doctor with a walking cane and a perpetual bad mood.
Monk. The neurotic detective Adrian Monk, he's brilliant.
Flight of the Conchords. The best post-cool band ever!
