1er Hub de Comida Ecológica en PR/ Puerto Rico's 1st Ecological Food Hub

Food Hub Subtittles-YouTube sharing 2 from Departamento de la Comida on Vimeo.

Puerto Rico, a beautiful island in the Caribbean full of history, culture, and good energy, is going through some interesting times. For years we have become a sort of food desert, with 90% of our food being imported, Agriculture and the local (let’s not even say “organic”) food movement facing tremendous obstacles, and our local ecosystems being contaminated and not protected. Like any domino-effect, this has brought us into a myriad of issues all revolving our food system. The island has a big population of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and bad eating habits “vis a vis” bad farming practices. Our economy is facing tough times, and farming has been very difficult to improve. When you go to a tropical island you expect to see fresh fruits, fresh fish, and happy healthy people, right?

El Departamento de la Comida, a.k.a. the Department of Food, is genuinely involved in this spiderweb of issues and answers. Founded in 2010 by two designers, Olga and Tara, it was created in response to a consumer concern of not eating good food. More in English to come!!!
